Caregivers at PEERS® MJ

At PEERS MJ, we recognize the critical role caregivers play in supporting individuals with neuro-diverse needs. Our program not only offers an opportunity for participants to develop valuable social skills, but it also provides caregivers with free training, equipping them with the tools to better assist their loved ones in real-life settings.  Caregivers would include parents, siblings, friends, paid support persons, etc.  Each participant is encouraged to bring a caregiver to act as a Social Coach.

Why Caregivers Matter

Caregivers are key to ensuring the skills learned during the PEERS® program are reinforced outside of the classroom. By involving caregivers in our process, we enable consistent support, helping participants practice and apply their new social abilities in everyday situations. This collaboration between PEERS MJ and caregivers significantly enhances the impact and success of the program.

Free Training for Caregivers

When caregivers volunteer for PEERS MJ, they receive comprehensive, evidence-based training at no cost. This training helps caregivers:

  • Understand the PEERS® Curriculum: Gain insight into the strategies used to teach social skills and how to reinforce them at home or in the community.

  • Support Participants: Learn effective techniques to assist participants in practicing conversation skills, resolving conflicts, managing bullying, and more.

  • Build Confidence: Develop the knowledge and confidence to guide participants through social interactions and real-world situations, ensuring long-term success.

Caregiver Roles in the Progam

Caregivers who volunteer with PEERS MJ will be asked to:

  • Attend Sessions: Attend weekly sessions to learn the skills being taught.

  • Act as Social Coach: Provide one-on-one coaching outside of class, helping participants practice their skills in familiar environments.

  • Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with PEERS MJ staff to review session content and receive guidance on how to effectively support participants as they progress.

Benefits of Volunteering as a Caregiver

Volunteering not only benefits participants but also allows caregivers to gain valuable tools and resources. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Free, Specialized Training: Caregivers receive expert training that can be applied both in and out of the PEERS® program.

  • Stronger Relationships: Caregivers can strengthen their connection with their participant by supporting them as they navigate social challenges and achieve milestones.

  • Enhanced Understanding: Through training and observation, caregivers deepen their understanding of social skills development and how it impacts neuro-diverse individuals.
